Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy

What Is It?

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery to remove a cyst from the ovary, while keeping the ovary intact. It’s commonly used when a cyst is painful, persistent, or affecting fertility.

This procedure is done using keyhole surgery — small cuts, a camera, and special instruments — offering a faster and more comfortable recovery compared to open surgery.

When Is It Needed?

Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy may be recommended if:

  • The cyst is large or painful
  • It does not go away on its own
  • The cyst is causing pressure symptoms (bloating, frequent urination, etc.)
  • The cyst appears abnormal on ultrasound
  • There are concerns about ovarian torsion (twisting)
  • The cyst is interfering with fertility

Endometriotic cystectomy

  • Remove endometriotic cysts (also called endometriomas) from the ovaries.
  • These cysts form due to endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb — often causing pain, irregular periods, and fertility issues.
  • This procedure helps relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and may enhance fertility in women trying to conceive.

How Is It Performed?

The procedure is done under general anaesthesia. Here’s what to expect:

  • 3–4 small incisions are made in the abdomen.
  • A thin camera (laparoscope) is inserted to view the ovaries.
  • The cyst is carefully separated from the ovary and removed.
  • The ovary is preserved and left to heal naturally.
  • The small incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Key Benefits

  • Minimally invasive (small cuts, less pain)
  • Faster recovery compared to open surgery
  • Minimal scarring
  • Short hospital stay (usually same-day discharge)
  • Preserves the ovary and hormonal balance
  • Fertility-friendly procedure

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Mild discomfort or bloating for a few days
  • Light activity can be resumed in 2–3 days
  • Full recovery typically within 1–2 weeks

You may have some mild vaginal spotting or cramping after surgery — this is normal.

Fertility & Pregnancy

Many women have healthy pregnancies after ovarian cystectomy, especially if the cyst was affecting ovulation or hormone levels.
Your doctor will guide you on when it’s safe to try conceiving — often after 1 or 2 menstrual cycles post-surgery.
